Supermarket Subtleties

20 Sep

it’s slightly unusual/difficult learning how to properly grocery shop in a foreign country that speaks a different language. you have to pay for grocery bags. the clerks sit down. i can’t find the trash bags. there sure are a lot of kinds of yogurt, but none of them look like the kinds i like.

we got a jar of stone-ground mustard, expecting a spicy dijon thing, but were surprised to get it home and find out  it was sweet. if we had german, this would have been obvious–it’s says “sweet mustard” on the jar. i never go for sweet mustard, but it was ok. actually it was really good. next time at the supermarkt, we bought some arugula. i wanted to make a salad with dinner, but arugula’s a little bitter to eat straight, ya? then i said, “isn’t there such a thing as a honey-mustard dressing? and wouldn’t that go great with arugula’s bitterness? jason, is it possible to make such a thing from the items at hand?”

“why yes, ian,” replied jason, “i think we have just what we need.”

so we came up with this little recipe:

Arugula Salad mit Home-Made Honey-Mustard Dressing
(serves 2)

ingredients:
1 package Rucola Deutschland, 125g
1 jar Händlmaier’s süßer Hausmachersenf
1 bottle olive oil
1 bottle balsamic vinegar

in a small bowl, like smaller than a cereal bowl, spoon in some sweet mustard. that looks like enough. then add some olive oil until it seems like it’ll have the consistency of a salad dressing. we ran out–it was a little heavy on the mustard. don’t make the same mistake–have an extra bottle handy if yours is running low. add a little balsamic vinegar for color, splash of flavor. mix with a spoon.

now get out some salad bowls. hand some arugula in, enough to fill each bowl. ok, you can cut the stems off if you want. do you like tomatoes? i used to hate the things, but now i think they’re pretty great. slice some in there. maybe crumble on some weird german cured sausage, if you happen to have it laying around.

spoon on your salad dressing et voila, buon apetito!
